World Environment Day celebrated across Kargil with plantation drives, awareness programmes

World Environment Day was celebrated across Kargil district with enthusiasm and active public participation, marked by plantation drives and awareness programmes aimed at promoting environmental conservation and sustainable practices.

At Yokat Tsok, Bodhkarboo, the Department of Forest Ecology and Environment organized a plantation drive in the presence of the Block Forest Officer (BFO) and staff of the Shakar-Chiktan Block. During the programme, 245 saplings, including Kikar, Kashmiri Willow and Willow (Salix alba), were planted. The initiative focused on enhancing green cover and creating awareness about the importance of protecting natural resources and maintaining ecological balance.

In another initiative, the Forest Department, Soudh Block, conducted plantation activities on June 4, planting 150 saplings at the Gurgurdoo Departmental Unit and 50 saplings at the Garkone Departmental Unit as part of ongoing efforts to promote a greener and healthier environment in the district.

Meanwhile, the University of Ladakh, Kargil Campus, also observed World Environment Day with the participation of students, faculty members, staff and officials from the Forest Department. The programme featured expert lectures on environmental conservation and sustainable development, followed by a plantation drive and community-based activities.

The Department of Forests, TSG Block, played a significant role in the event by supporting plantation efforts and highlighting the importance of preserving natural resources for future generations.

The celebrations concluded with participants taking a collective pledge to work towards environmental protection and sustainable development, reflecting the district's growing commitment to safeguarding the environment and promoting ecological sustainability.
