Sonamling Tibetan settlement observes World Health Day on the theme ‘Depression -- Let’s Talk’

Sonamling Tibetan settlement joins its Tibetan community at Sonamling hall Choglamsar on April 7 to celebrate World Health Day (WHD). This year theme of the day is “Depression, Let’s Talk.”

Dhondup Gyalpo, Coordinator Changthang Sonamling Tibetan Refugee Settlement said, “The day is celebrated every year on different themes to highlight various global health issues. 

Talking on the theme of the year, he said that the depression cases are lesser in Tibetan community comparing to other society. 

However, with the drastic materialistic changes, depression is common among younger generations. Since depression is an issue in every place, talking about the depression with someone close will be one of the best solutions. One can prevent extreme stage of depression by sharing and talking.

Kunsang Dolma, Nurse Tibetan Health Centre Choglamsar said that everyone has a problem. Becoming emotional and unhappy is usual. However, taking extreme steps to the extent of suicide is a weak decision. Highlighting some facts about the illness, she stated that depression can be treated. Care of friends and family along with a medical help is needed for the one who is depressed.

World Health Day is celebrated on 7 April every year. It was in the year 1948, WHO held the First World Health Assembly. The aim is to mark the anniversary of the founding of WHO provides with a unique opportunity to mobilize action around specific health issues of concern to people all over the world.
