Solid waste management programme launched in Choglamsar Blue and green dustbins given to residents and shopkeepers

With an aim to manage waste, a program on secondary segregation of solid waste was launched on December 13 in Solar Colony, Choglamsar. The initiative was taken by Rural Development Department, Leh supported by Hill Council.

For segregation of waste, a group of women from Solar Colony volunteered who has trained in Rural Development Department.

Dr. Sonam Dawa, CEC appreciated the initiative of an innovative program on managing solid waste in Choglamsar and said that it’s a New Year gift from the administration and assured full support of Council in delivering this gift to every part in the district.

Praising the woman group for volunteering for a good cause, he said that they are inspiring and setting an example for others to contribute towards keeping society and environment clean.

He directed ACD, Leh to provide them with heating and other facilities and thanked DC for involving locals in this project. 

Dr. Sonam Dawa said that with this program people of Choglamsar should set an example of how to keep the area and houses clean and spread awareness on cleanliness in every village of Leh district.

Terming the program as a solution to the waste management problem, Avny Lavasa, DC, Leh said that the result and benefit depends on the residents of the area.

"The initiative is easy to implement and modifications will be done based on public response. Based on the success of this project in Choglamsar similar center would be opened in other villages of the district", she added.

Avny Lavasa said that the basis of the project is to find possibilities to reuse the waste generated and also to supply it for recycling to organizations like PAGIR.

A blue and green colored dustbin was distributed to the residents and shopkeepers of Choglamsar and a short video on awareness on solid waste management was also screened.
