Solid waste management centre inaugurated in Choglamsar Choglamsar centre is the first of project Tsang-Da under Rurban Mission

The project titled ‘Tsang-Da’ for the secondary segregation of organic and inorganic waste, Solid Waste Management center was inaugurated by Dr. Sonam Dawa, CEC on January 21 at Solar Colony, Choglamsar.
  
The project was started under Rurban Mission and funds of LAHDC Council.

Avny Lavasa, DC, Tsering Sandup, EC Tourism, Moses Kunzang, ADC Leh Councilors, District Officers and residents and shopkeepers of Choglamsar area were also present.

Dr. Sonam Dawa appreciated RDD, Leh for successful implementation of the pilot project and said, “It is the conception of DC, Leh to have such a waste segregation center and its right in time. I am hopeful that in coming 2 years with all our cooperation she would be able to make Leh the cleanest district in the country.”

He further said that this pilot project should set itself as an exemplary model to spread the message of cleanliness and inspire people all over the district to achieve zero waste in their respective villages.

He added, “The onus is on youths in particular to shoulder the responsibility of ensuring cleanliness and preserving our fragile ecology. Conscious commitment and cooperation on part of every individual and household only would make this project successful.” 
 
Avny Lavasa, DC, Leh said that the objective of having this segregation centre is to ensure the reuse of solid waste and informed that in 1 month the centre has collected 1660 kg of solid waste collected from 400 houses and shops in Choglamsar out of which 170 kg has already been sold to scrap dealers, 800 kg bought on subsidised rates by PAGIR (an NGO for the physically challenged who make recycled products), while wet waste is being taken to Nang village as animal feed to an animal shelter.

The Choglamsar center is the first center of project Tsang-Da under Rurban Mission launched by District Administration through Rural Development Department with the support of Hill Council.
She said that similar centers would be started in other blocks of the district and a positive message should spread from the successful functioning of this center at Choglamsar.

She also encouraged the 5 ladies from Solar Colony who volunteered to do the segregation job.
 
Dr. Dawa also announced that these five workers will be felicitated on August 15, 2018, for the noble work. DC also appreciated the personal initiative of Tsering Paldan, ACD, Leh and his entire team for making the center functional.

Tsering Sandup, EC, Rural Development and Sanitation said that increasing garbage has been a challenging issue for the Council and under the chairmanship of Dr. Sonam Dawa, the Council is working on solutions to address the issue.

He mentioned about a recent visit of experts on waste management and expressed hope to sort the waste issue soon with their upcoming project in Leh.

Phuntsog Dorjey, Councilor Phyang expressed gratitude to DC, Leh and CEC, LAHDC for opening the center in Choglamsar under Rurban Mission.

He also urged the people of Choglamsar to extend all their support and cooperation to set Choglamsar as the cleanest area in Leh.

A street play on segregation of waste and a short training film about the working model of the center were also presented on the occasion.
