The Sarhad Shauryathon, a marathon celebrating the courage and sacrifice of Kargil War heroes, was held on July 22 at the iconic Kargil War Memorial in Drass. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from across Ladakh and various parts of the country, uniting people in a tribute to India’s bravehearts.

The event was graced by the CEC, LAHDC-Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, who lauded the initiative and extended heartfelt gratitude to the armed forces for their sacrifices. He congratulated the organisers for the successful execution of the marathon and remarked, “Sarhad Shauryathon is a reminder of our soldiers’ courage and our people’s unity.”

On the sidelines of the event, the CEC met Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Eknath Shinde, and discussed various developmental issues concerning Kargil. The Deputy CM assured the provision of a CT Scan machine for Sub-District Hospital Drass, as well as ambulances for the district. He also pledged support to boost tourism in Drass.

Organised in the lead-up to Kargil Vijay Diwas (July 26), the Shauryathon blended patriotism, fitness, and remembrance in the very mountains that bore witness to the 1999 Kargil War. Jointly organised by the Indian Army and Sarhad Pune, the event featured race categories of 5 km, 10 km, and 21 km, drawing participation from youth, school students, civilians, and armed forces personnel.

Participants ran through the rugged terrain of Drass, symbolically retracing the footsteps of the brave soldiers who defended the nation. The Shauryathon marked the beginning of a series of events commemorating India’s victory and the valour of its soldiers during the Kargil conflict.
