Review meeting on implementation of new criminal laws held in Nubra

A review meeting on the implementation of the newly enacted criminal laws—Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam—was held under the chairmanship of Dr. Anju Rathi Rana, Secretary, Department of Legal Affairs, Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India, in Nubra on June 23.
The meeting was attended by Shashi Kant Bhagat, Additional Secretary, Department of Law and Justice, UT Ladakh; Mukul Beniwal (IAS), Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Nubra; Station House Officer (SHO), Nubra; two Law Officers from the UT Department of Law and Justice; and Naib Tehsildars of the Nubra Sub-Division.
The primary objective was to assess the readiness of local enforcement and administrative agencies in adopting and implementing the new legal framework, which has replaced the Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Indian Evidence Act.
During the interaction, the Chair sought feedback from grassroots-level functionaries on the practical challenges faced in transitioning to the new laws. Officers highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive training and capacity-building initiatives to ensure effective enforcement and procedural alignment with the updated statutes.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to conduct structured training modules and awareness programmes in coordination with relevant authorities, aimed at equipping officers with the necessary legal knowledge and clarity for seamless implementation.
