The pre-launch ceremony of the “Exposition of the Holy Relics of the Tathagata” was held at Hotel Grand Dragon in Leh on April 18, marking a significant step toward the upcoming sacred exposition in Ladakh. The event coincided with the observance of World Heritage Day and brought together members of civil society, government officials, and spiritual leaders.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Secretary of the Union Territory of Ladakh, Ashish Kundra, emphasized that the teachings and philosophy of Lord Buddha are deeply embedded in Ladakh’s living heritage. He noted that the forthcoming exposition of the sacred relics, scheduled on the auspicious occasion of Buddha Purnima, holds immense spiritual and cultural significance. Highlighting that these relics have been venerated across Buddhist countries worldwide, he expressed confidence that they would be received with equal devotion and reverence in Ladakh.

He further informed that the relics will be exhibited at Jevetsal in Leh before being taken to Zanskar, and subsequently to the Dharma Centre, where monks and nuns will offer special prayers. Kundra described this as a rare opportunity, noting that the Ministry of Culture has granted permission for the relics to remain in Ladakh for an extended period and to be taken to remote regions such as Zanskar.

The theme of the exposition, “Peace Beyond Borders,” was described as particularly relevant in the current global context, with Ladakh poised to convey a powerful message of peace to the world.

In his keynote address, Geshe Lhakdor opened with a verse of the Buddha and elaborated on the essence of compassion and wisdom in Buddhist teachings. He described ignorance as the root cause of suffering and underscored the continued relevance of the Buddha’s message in contemporary times. Referring to ongoing global conflicts, he stressed the importance of universal happiness, mutual respect, and non-violence as pathways to lasting peace. He also appreciated the deep faith of the people of Ladakh and highlighted the need for sustainability and conservation in preserving both spiritual and natural heritage.

Among those present on the occasion were Venerable Bhikkhu Sanghasena, Geshe Lhakdor, Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) Kargil

Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, along with officers of the UT Administration, spiritual leaders, and members of civil society.
