LEH :
Out of the 187 total schools, 30 primary schools and 1 middle school were closed down in Leh district. Factors like no students enrollment, scattered remote geographical region, emerging private schools, inadequate infrastructure especially in the remote area, are the main reason behind government school closer.

In the year of 2002, Primary school Taknak phu is the first school that is closed down in Leh district whereas, in 2012, Primary school Umla is closed down in Leh district.

In Khaltse zone, 10 primary schools whereas in Nubra zone, 9 primary schools and in Leh zone, 7 primary schools and one middle school were shut down. In addition, 4 primary schools from Kharu zone are closed down.

Leh district has six educational zones i.e. Leh, Kharu, Khalste, Nubra, Nyoma and Durbuk. Currently, there are 14 higher secondary schools, 32 high schools, 125 middle schools and 187 primary schools in Leh district.

A total of 8311 students enrolled in government schools of Leh district. The number of student enrollment is also dwindling from 8354 in 2013 to 8311 in 2017.

Dechen Tsomo, District education planning officer Leh traced that increasing private school enrollment to the belief among the parents that it provides better value for money and better teaching.

In fact, we all accept that children's knowledge levels in private schools are better than those in government schools, she added.
To cope with this kind of mentality, government teachers are trained on various subjects and child psychology, adolescent issues at District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) Leh.

Nubra and Khaltse zone has highest numbers of schools closed down. Improve in living standard and rural to urban migration is another main reason behind its shutdown. The decision is based on the school enrolment at present.

She further added that ₹1.16 crore is spent on Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) - the national programme for universal elementary education. To retain the student enrollment in these schools, it offers not just mid-day meals, school uniform and books but also quality education that ensures bright future.
