Mega Knee replacement camp concludes in Kargil, 24 successful total knee replacement surgeries performed
The three-day Mega Total Knee Replacement (TKR) Camp organized by AL-REZA Health Care & Research Foundation (HC & RF), the health wing of Jamait Ul Ulema Isna Ashriya Kargil, concluded successfully at QAAM Hospital, Kurbathang, Kargil.
During the camp held from June 14 to 16, a total of 24 advanced Total Knee Replacement surgeries were successfully performed for poor and needy patients suffering from severe osteoarthritis of the knees, including those with associated health conditions.
The concluding ceremony was held at the Tourist Facilitation Centre, Bemathang, Kargil, on June 16 night, where AL-REZA HC & RF expressed gratitude and appreciation to visiting doctors, dignitaries, volunteers, paramedical staff, and all those involved in the successful conduct of the camp.
The camp was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Kargil, Rakesh Kumar, who attended as the chief guest. The event was attended by renowned knee replacement surgeon from Dubai, Badar Azam Khan; WHO representative Moses Chowdhary; Hojjat Ul Islam Sheikh Ali Mussa Irfani, Member Ullema Council JUIAK; Chief Medical Officer Kargil, Dr. Mohd Abass; In-charge Medical Superintendent, Dr. Sajjad Hussain; doctors, and volunteers.
The camp was organized by AL-REZA HC & RF in collaboration with the Department of Health Kargil.
Dr. Badar Azam Khan, popularly known as “Dr Knee,” along with his team, conducted the surgeries. With over 25 years of international experience in orthopaedics and joint replacement surgery, Dr. Khan specializes in advanced robotic knee replacement procedures, customized implants, and regenerative therapies for osteoarthritis.
Around 90 patients with various knee-related ailments were screened during the camp, following which 24 patients underwent successful Total Knee Replacement surgeries.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Badar Azam Khan expressed gratitude to the District Administration and AL-REZA Health Care & Research Foundation for providing him the opportunity to serve the people of Kargil. He stated that the objective of the camp was not only to perform surgeries but also to enhance local medical capacity by sharing knowledge and surgical expertise with doctors in Kargil.
Through practical training and mentorship, he said, local doctors gained valuable skills that would help them independently perform such procedures in the future, contributing towards self-sufficiency in advanced orthopaedic care.
Dr. Khan also emphasized the importance of preventive healthcare and knee health awareness. He informed that he is pursuing knee health awareness programmes in coordination with the World Health Organization and welcomed the participation of the WHO representative during the camp.
The three-day camp benefited a large number of patients suffering from severe knee ailments while also contributing to the long-term development of specialized orthopaedic services in Kargil.
High-skill anaesthesia, including epidural anaesthesia, was administered to patients by the dedicated anaesthesia team headed by Dr. Mohd Asif, renowned anaesthesiologist at District Hospital Kargil.
President AL-REZA HC & RF, Dr. Mohd Abass, thanked the visiting doctors for travelling from Dubai and dedicating their time to treat patients in the far-flung region. He also expressed gratitude to the UT Administration of Ladakh, CEC LAHDC Kargil, District Administration, CMO, Medical Superintendent, RMO District Hospital Kargil, surgeons, anaesthetists, OT staff, ICU staff, post-operative and ward teams, AL-REZA volunteers, and media personnel for their valuable support.
President JUIAK, Sheikh Nazir Ul Mehdi Mohammadi, also greeted Dr. Badar Azam Khan and his team and congratulated them for successfully conducting the Mega Knee Replacement Camp.
People from across Kargil appreciated the efforts of AL-REZA HC & RF for bringing internationally renowned medical experts to their doorstep and providing complex surgical treatment facilities to needy patients.
