A meeting regarding the installation of a wind power project in Ladakh was convened under the chairmanship of Joint Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Bhanu Pratap Yadav on December 6 at DC Office Conference Hall, Leh.

Giving detail information about the benefit of renewable energy, Bhanu Pratap Yadav said that Ladakh has a huge potential in terms of wind and solar energy as compared to other parts of the country. He said that non-renewable energy is the main pollutant causing climate change-related issues.

Exploring the possibilities of setting up wind power projects in Ladakh region, location for installation of the wind power plant, setting up wind masts for validation of wind resources and other implementation-related issues were discussed in detail.

Project Director, LREDA, Leh spoke about the good wind resource in Ladakh due to its valley shape terrain and temporal variation.

He informed that Ladakh has a capacity to produce wind energy of nearly 1 Lakh MW within 5% of its total area. Also, at 50 m the estimated wind power potential is around 5311 MW and at 120 m, the estimated wind power potential is around 1,00,000 MW.

Sachin Kumar, Deputy Commissioner, Leh; Dr. K. Balaram, Director General, National Institute of Wind Energy; S.K Mishra, Director Solar Energy Corporation, officers of Air force, BRO and various company representatives attended the meeting.
