Meet on social evils held for children

Serra Sports and welfare society organised a seminar on Social evils on 21st November at Shenam Community Hall for the senior students of the various schools in Leh. 

The guests at the occasion were Dr Iqbal, Inspector Tsewang Dorjey, General Secretary Anjuman Moin-ul-Islam (Youth Wing) Iftikar Ahmad and President Anjuman-e-Imamia(Youth Wing) Muzaffar Hussain and President LBA (Youth Wing) Rinchen Namgyal.
 
The main aim was to make the children in the society aware of the social evils so that they don’t fall prey to it. 

Dr Iqbal explained the children about the most prevalent social evils like drug addiction, consumption of alcohol and smoking which are termed as a psycho-active substance which is further divided into licit and illicit substance.
 
He said that excessive alcohol consumption has become the reason for many health problems which causes death. He said that last year around 72 people were admitted in SNM hospital due to alcohol related diseases and 9 of them died. He said that most of the people admitted due to excessive use of psycho-active substance were young. 

He also mentioned that there are people in Leh who are also addicted to opium through injecting that contains opium.  He also mentioned an incident of a drug racket in Leh that had been caught. He requested the Religious Community Youth leaders to pressure the administration to form an active de-addiction centre in Leh so that all the cases can be resolved through counselling as addiction do not have instant medication. 

Inspector Tsewang Dorjey through a presentation showed the students a number of social evils existing in our society. Apart from excessive alcohol consumption leading to maximum fatal road accidents, and number of other social evils like drug abuse, caste differences, cultural pollution, cybercrime/misusing of communication, ratak (dowry), migration to cities, consumerism vs self-reliance, over use of motor vehicles and tuitions becoming a means of earning were also mentioned as social evils which are gradually rooting in our society. 

He emphasised mostly on excessive alcohol consumption which affects the life of the person, deteriorate his family and friend relations. He mentioned that consumption of arac is also becoming very prevalent in our society that causes fatal diseases.
 
He said that the citizens including the students should be involved in community policing. 
 
The representatives of the Youth Wing of Religious communities unanimously agreed that a de-addiction centre must be made in Leh and they all will strive to make it possible.

Rinchen Namgyal added that a plan for making a de-addiction centre is in progress with the help of the centre government. Iftikar Hussain emphasised that apart from the mentioned social evils, child labour is also becoming prevalent of which we must keep a check.
 
Muzaffar Hussain said that a solution to these problems can be found only when the children get the quality education which will go a long way in their life to differentiate between the right and wrong actions.

Towards the end of the event, an interaction session also took place between the guests and the children.
