Leh to launch cervical cancer vaccination drive from July 18

CEC, LAHDC Leh, Adv. Tashi Gyalson chaired a key meeting at the Council Secretariat on June 26 to discuss public health initiatives, with a focus on the upcoming cervical cancer vaccination drive and other health-related matters.

The meeting was attended by Director Health Services Tashi Thinles; Chief Planning Officer Tsewang Gyalson; Chief Controller of Finance Zulfiqar Ali; Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr. Dolma Chuskit; Medical Superintendent SNM Hospital, Dr. Rinchen Chosdol; State Immunisation Officer Dr. Iqbal Ahmed; and Dr. Stobdan Kalon, Regional Health Policy and Advocacy Advisor.

The proposed rollout of the cervical cancer vaccination campaign was discussed in detail, with a tentative launch date set for July 18. CEC Gyalson directed the CMO to initiate necessary steps for the procurement of the Gardasil-9 vaccine. In alignment with the observance of July as the ‘Month of Compassion’, the campaign will be launched as a preventive healthcare initiative aimed at inclusivity and community care. The vaccine will be distributed to identified beneficiaries, with full support facilitated by the Council.

In parallel, a comprehensive awareness campaign will be conducted to promote preventive healthcare and encourage community participation across the district.

Dr. Stobdan Kalon also briefed the Council on a proposed health insurance scheme. The Council expressed interest in exploring it further as a pilot initiative to improve access to essential medical services.

The Health Department was instructed to submit a detailed implementation plan for the vaccination drive, including coordination with Mahabodhi and other relevant agencies to ensure smooth execution.
