In a significant step towards developing safe, smart and sustainable public transport infrastructure, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on August 31 laid the foundation stone for 30 Ladakhi Smart Bus Shelters, with 15 each planned in Leh and Kargil.

The project has been designed keeping in view Ladakh's challenging climatic conditions and the needs of students, senior citizens, women, working professionals and daily commuters, who often have to wait for public transport in the open, particularly during the harsh winter months.

The Smart Bus Shelters will be equipped with modern passenger information and safety features. GPS-enabled Passenger Information Display Systems, LED displays, bus tracking and real-time Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) information will enable commuters to access details about bus routes and expected arrival times.

To enhance passenger safety, the shelters will also be equipped with CCTV surveillance, SOS/emergency buttons, first-aid kits, emergency oxygen cylinders and fire extinguishers. Tactile tiles and accessible movement provisions have also been incorporated to make the facilities more inclusive for visually impaired persons and other passengers with accessibility needs.

A key feature of the project is its solar-powered design. Each shelter will have a 2 KW solar photovoltaic system, battery storage and a hybrid inverter. Solar energy will power Wi-Fi connectivity, passenger information displays and other essential facilities, reducing dependence on grid electricity and operational costs while contributing to the vision of a Carbon-Neutral Ladakh.

The shelters will also incorporate elements of Ladakhi architecture, blending modern technology with the region's distinctive cultural identity and heritage.
L-G Saxena said the initiative was not merely about constructing bus shelters but about creating safe, comfortable, technology-enabled and sustainable public transport infrastructure suited to Ladakh's unique geographical and climatic conditions.

He said the shelters would provide covered seating and weather-protected waiting spaces, offering commuters much-needed protection from extreme cold, strong winds and snowfall.

“These Smart Bus Shelters will become symbols of better mobility, safety, technology, sustainability and citizen-centric services in Ladakh. Our aim is to create infrastructure that responds to our difficult climate, is environment-friendly and, most importantly, meets the daily needs of our people,” the Lieutenant Governor said.

The L-G expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for their continued support and guidance towards the development of modern infrastructure and improved public facilities in Ladakh.

He also appealed to the people to take ownership of the facilities and cooperate with the Administration in keeping the Smart Bus Shelters clean, well-maintained and functional.
