KVK Nyoma revives traditional greenhouse farming in Changthang
Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Nyoma, under the leadership of Dr. Phuntsog Tundup, visited traditional mud-walled greenhouses in Tsaga and Kargyam villages of Changthang on May 10 as part of a green initiative promoting sustainable agriculture.
During the visit, greenhouse UV films were distributed among farmers of Tsaga and Kargyam villages to strengthen protected cultivation practices and improve fresh vegetable production. The initiative aimed to enhance self-sufficiency in vegetable cultivation and support climate-resilient farming systems in the remote areas of Changthang.
On the second day, an awareness camp on “Soil Fertility Management through Natural Farming Techniques” was organised at Sato village. The programme focused on promoting eco-friendly and low-cost farming methods to maintain soil health and ensure sustainable agricultural productivity.
More than 40 farmers actively participated in the awareness camp and interacted with Dr. Tundup on natural farming practices, organic inputs, and marketing strategies for their produce.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Phuntsog Tundup highlighted the importance of integrating traditional knowledge with scientific approaches to ensure sustainable agricultural development in the region.
Farmers appreciated the efforts of KVK Nyoma in addressing local agricultural challenges and promoting innovative yet practical solutions suited to Ladakh’s harsh climatic conditions.
The programme concluded with an interactive session during which farmers shared their experiences and discussed future prospects for strengthening sustainable agriculture in Changthang.
