KVK Leh celebrates International Year of Millets

As a part of the nationwide campaign to promote the production and consumption of millets in our daily diets and to promote nutritional security in the country, Krishi Vigyan Kendra-Leh celebrated ‘International Year of Millets 2023’.

Vegetable seed kits were distributed among the farming community aiming to help the farm women to take up kitchen gardening and to ensure year-round availability of fresh vegetables for their families. Many girls were also served with value-added products made with locally grown cereals.

A plantation drive was also conducted in which twigs of locally grown Salix species were distributed and planted.

Dr. F.D. Sheikh, Sr. Scientist and Head KVK-Leh said that in the 75th year of the country’s independence that is being celebrated as ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’, this nationwide campaign has been launched in which all the agricultural institutes of the country have been involved.

To aware the participants of the role of a balanced diet in ensuring nutritional security, Dr. Sabiya Asmat spoke about the importance of the government’s flagship programme POSHAN Abhiyan. Dr. F. D. Sheikh elaborated on sustainable agriculture practices and the role of plantations in promoting a safe and healthy environment. Dr. Parveen Kumar shared his views on various Nutri-cereals and their role in ensuring nutritional security for all.

Dr. Vikas Gupta and Dr. H. L. Verma Subject Matter Specialists at KVK-Leh were also present.
