Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Leh celebrates Kisan Divas

Krishi Vigyan Kendra-Leh, SKUAST-K celebrated Kisan Divas at KVK-Leh, on December 23 in Stakna. 

Farmers and farm women from different villages participated. A special arrangement was also made at KVK-Leh for a live presentation of the National Breed Conservation Award Ceremony. The awards were presented by the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR).

With the efforts put in by Dr. Feroz Din Sheikh, Programme Coordinator at KVK-Leh, a farmer Tsering Angchuk from Kharnak village of Leh district was conferred with the National Breed Conservation Award. The award carries a certificate and cash prize of rupees ten thousand. 

Video documentary depicting the life and livelihood strategies of nomadic tribes of Changthang region made by Dr. Feroz Din Sheikh was also released by Dr. D. Namgyal, ADR&E, HMAARI, SKUAST-K.

Dr. Kunzang Lamo, SMS (Veg. Science). Dr. Parveen Kumar SMS (Ag. Extension) briefed the farmers about the importance of Farmers’ Day. They stressed the need to recognize the efforts of farmers at the national and international level to instill a sense of confidence among them and also motivate other farmers to do their best. 

Dr. Feroz Din Sheikh deliberated upon the efforts of KVK-Leh in promoting sustainable agriculture in this region. 

Dr. D. Namgyal highlighted the contribution of Late Ch. Charan Singh Former Prime minister of India towards the farming community on whose remembrance the day is celebrated. Thanking the producers for their valuable contribution towards ensuring food and nutritional security for all; he also appreciated the farming community of this region for working tirelessly in such freezing temperatures to make food available for all. 

Dr. Sabiya Asmat SMS (Home Science) elaborated upon the various food processing technologies. Dr. Vikas Gupta SMS (Plant Pathology) also highlighted the role of the farmers in augmenting food production in the country. 

The programme was also attended by Nisar Ahmed (Asstt. Comptroller); Jigmet Laskit, Sonam Angchuk and Rigzin Safal (Programme Assistants), and Kunzes Dolma. Many progressive farmers of the region Sonam Odpal, Tsering Angchuk, Padma Dolkar also attended the function.
