A team of 250 soldiers and 100 community members cleaned the Indus River bank over a stretch of three kilometres, extending up to  50 meters from the bank on December 14.

A ‘Clean Indus, Green Indus’ initiative was undertaken under the aegis of HQ Leh Sub Area,  local communities, school children and NCC cadets.

Discarded plastic, polythene bags and bottles were removed, resulting in the collection of three truckloads of garbage. The campaign was aimed to raise awareness among the community, tourists and school children about the importance of keeping our water bodies clean, as they are our lifeline.

Deputy General Officer Commanding, Leh Sub Area flagged off the cleaning teams after an inaugural speech. He emphasised the importance of maintaining a clean environment and water bodies, discouraging the habit of littering. He stated that cleanliness is the foundation of a cultured society and that we must instill this habit in ourselves and educate others too.

The Indian Army’s initiative was well received and appreciated by all present, with the slogan ‘Jawan Aur Awam Hasil Hai Muqam’ (Soldier and citizen, together we achieve success) resonating throughout the event.
