Heritage walk marks World Heritage Day celebrations in Kargil
World Heritage Day 2026 was celebrated with enthusiasm and strong community participation in Kargil through a meaningful heritage walk organised in and around Goma village on April 18. The programme was held under the global theme “Emergency Response for Living Heritage in Contexts of Conflicts and Disasters,” highlighting the urgent need to safeguard cultural heritage in vulnerable regions like Ladakh.
The event was graced by Deputy Commissioner and CEO, LAHDC Kargil, Rakesh Kumar, who attended as the Chief Guest and formally flagged off the heritage walk. Renowned architect Fayaz Ali participated as the Special Guest and guided participants throughout the walk.
The heritage walk covered several historically and culturally significant sites, including Khanka Goma, Old Imam Bargah Kargil, Hartun, Imam Bargah Goma, and Chospang. The initiative offered participants a firsthand experience of the region’s rich and living heritage. Students and attendees were sensitised to the importance of preserving these sites, particularly in the face of environmental challenges and evolving socio-cultural dynamics.
During the walk, architect Fayaz Ali, along with cultural activist Anayat Ali, provided detailed insights into the architectural styles, historical significance, and cultural narratives associated with each site. The interactive sessions enabled students to connect more deeply with their roots and appreciate the value of heritage conservation.
Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Commissioner lauded the efforts of Kargil’s education sector, led by the Chief Education Officer, for the notable improvement in Class 10 examination results compared to previous years. He emphasised the need to further strengthen educational standards through activity-based and experiential learning approaches that promote creativity, critical thinking, and holistic development among students.
He also commended the contributions of cultural activist Anayat Ali Shotopa for his sustained efforts in preserving and promoting Kargil’s cultural heritage.
The Deputy Commissioner acknowledged his initiative of organising World Heritage Day celebrations in the district since 2022, which has now evolved into a significant annual event fostering awareness and community participation.
Furthermore, he assured that the issues and demands raised by the school, as highlighted by Village Education Committee Secretary Abass Ali Khan, would be addressed on priority.
The programme was organised by the Himalayan Cultural Heritage Foundation in collaboration with Council Model High School, Goma, reflecting strong coordination between civil society and the education sector in promoting heritage awareness.
The event witnessed active participation from Headmaster Zareena Batool, Convenor of the Kargil Chapter of the Foundation, members of the Village Education Committee, parents, teachers, and a large number of students.
The celebration concluded on a positive note, with participants expressing a renewed commitment to preserving and protecting Kargil’s unique cultural identity and heritage for future generations.
