Government Model Degree College Zanskar celebrates World Mountain Day
Government Model Degree College (GMDC) Zanskar observed World Mountain Day on December 11 in collaboration with the Department of Tourism, Zanskar–Kargil, highlighting the importance of mountains and the urgent need for their conservation. The event was held under the supervision of Dr. Amjad Ali Abassi, Principal, GMDC Zanskar, who emphasized the critical role mountains play in maintaining ecological balance and sustaining life on Earth.
The programme featured a special PowerPoint presentation by Rasool Lal, Tourist Officer, Zanskar. He discussed the significance of Zanskar's mountains, the region’s heavy dependence on them, and the unique geological features of the Zanskar range. His presentation underscored the need for conservation and sustainable development in the region, particularly in light of challenges posed by climate change, tourism pressures, and human activities.
Dr. Jamphel Sheyan, Assistant Professor (English), GMDC Zanskar, highlighted the urgent need to protect glaciers and conserve mountain ecosystems by adopting organic products and reducing carbon footprints.
Students and faculty members also shared their ideas and suggestions on promoting conservation and encouraging the sustainable use of mountain resources.
A documentary on the mountains and glaciers of the Zanskar region was screened for the students, offering valuable insights into the importance of preserving their natural heritage.
The event aimed to raise awareness about the significance of mountains and the risks they face, including climate change, biodiversity loss, ecological imbalance, deforestation, and unsustainable development.
Participants appreciated the college’s efforts to promote environmental awareness and conservation, pledging to contribute to the protection of the fragile mountain ecosystem.
On the occasion, Dr. Vilayat Ali, Assistant Professor (History), GMDC Zanskar, delivered the vote of thanks, expressing sincere gratitude to all who contributed to the success of the event.
