GDC Nubra observes World Environment Day with plantation drive and awareness activities

The Department of Environmental Science, Government Degree College (GDC) Nubra, observed World Environment Day on June 5 with a series of awareness and plantation activities held on the college campus.
Assistant Professor of Environmental Science, Tsewang Lahmo, addressed the gathering, highlighting the deep connection between a clean environment, healthy lifestyle, and conscious living. She emphasized the significance of avoiding plastic—especially single-use plastic—stating that microplastics have infiltrated every corner of the planet, threatening ecosystems and human health alike.
This year’s World Environment Day, held under the theme “Putting an End to Plastic Pollution,” called for unified action to combat the global plastic crisis.
Dr. Tsewang Motup, Principal of GDC Nubra, underscored the urgency of reducing plastic consumption to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to sustainable production, consumption, and promoting mindful living.
As part of the celebration, a plantation drive was carried out at the college’s Arboretum/Eco Park. Faculty, staff, and students each planted a tree, symbolizing love, respect, and commitment to Mother Earth. The drive also marked the launch of the nationwide campaign “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam”—an initiative encouraging the younger generation to take meaningful action for a greener future.
The event concluded with all participants taking a collective oath to nurture and protect the trees they had planted, reaffirming their responsibility toward environmental stewardship.
