GDC Khaltse organises anti-drug awareness programme under Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan
An anti-drug awareness programme under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan was organised on May 7 at Government Degree College (GDC) Khaltse in collaboration with the Ladakh Police to create awareness among students about the growing menace of substance abuse in society.
Principal Dr. Sameena Iqbal highlighted the importance of staying away from drugs and encouraged students to play an active role in building a healthy and responsible society.
Addressing the gathering, SHO Khaltse Police Station, Jamyang Namgyal, spoke extensively on the alarming rise of drug abuse in Ladakh and its serious social and health consequences.
He discussed various types of drugs reportedly being used in the region, including brown sugar, heroin, charas, and LSD, and explained their harmful and potentially fatal impact on the human body.
He further elaborated on how substance dependence develops over time and how gateway addictions such as cigarettes and tobacco often become stepping stones towards more dangerous drugs.
Jamyang Namgyal also raised concern over increasing public health risks, including the spread of hepatitis due to syringe sharing among drug users.
He informed the audience about the active role being played by the Ladakh Police in tackling drug trafficking and apprehending peddlers, while stressing the need for stronger cooperation from civil society.
Urging the youth to take collective responsibility in combating drug abuse, he called upon the people of Ladakh to work together to safeguard the future of society.
