The Department of Geography, Government Degree College (GDC) Kargil, organised an educational field study tour to Parkachik village and Parkachik Glacier to provide students with practical exposure to glacial landforms, geomorphological processes and human-environment interactions in Ladakh’s high-altitude Himalayan region.

The tour was conducted under the guidance of Head of the Department Sayed Mustafa Kamal and faculty member Tashi Gyatso.

During the visit, students examined various glacial landforms associated with Parkachik Glacier and gained first-hand insights into the geomorphological features shaped by glacial processes. The field study enabled them to connect classroom learning with real-world observations and deepen their understanding of the physical geography of the Himalayan region.

The students also interacted with local residents of Parkachik village to learn about their traditional lifestyles, livelihoods, settlement patterns and adaptation strategies in the challenging mountainous environment. The interactions helped them understand the relationship between geographical conditions and the socio-economic life of local communities.

Speaking on the occasion, Head of the Department Sayed Mustafa Kamal emphasised the importance of experiential learning in geography. He said field visits bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical observation, helping students better understand natural processes and human-environment interactions.

Faculty member Tashi Gyatso also highlighted the educational significance of the tour, noting that direct exposure to glacial features and interactions with local communities enhance students’ observational, analytical and field research skills.

The Department of Geography, GDC Kargil, continues to promote field-based learning as an integral part of academic development, providing students with opportunities to explore and understand the physical and human geography of Ladakh.

The college remains committed to academic excellence and the holistic development of students through practical learning, research and educational activities.
