Garkone hosts inaugural event of Apricot Blossom Festival

The Department of Tourism Kargil organised the inaugural event of the Apricot Blossom (Chuli Mendok) Festival in Garkone village as part of the 3rd Apricot Blossom Festival on April 6.

Assistant Director of Tourism Kargil, Rehmatullah Butt, was the chief guest. Assistant Tourist Officer Rasool Lal, Airport Authority Director Leh Ramandeep Singh Sani, and officers from the Indian Army, including Col. Rajesh Sahu, Col. Aman Mehta, Col. Dinesh Tanwar, and Incharge Police Post Darchiks, Abdul Qayum, attended the program. Besides, many national and international tourists, video bloggers, village community members, folk artists, and villagers were also present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, the Assistant Director of Tourism Kargil emphasised the significance of these culturally enriching programmes. He highlighted the potential for tourism in regions like these, where diversity in language, culture, and ethnicity stands out uniquely in the world.

Emphasising the significance of organising the festival, the Assistant Director said that Garkone and its neighbouring villages are renowned for producing high-quality apricots in the district. He urged the community to actively preserve their rich identity and cultural heritage.

Explaining the high potential of the Aryan belt in attracting tourists around the world, the Assistant Director of Tourism said this festival will send out a positive message to the rest of the world.

He further said that along with the unique landscapes of Ladakh, tourists during the festival will also have an interest to have a glimpse of local tradition, culture and food.

The Assistant Tourist Officer said that the District Administration is committed to extending all possible support to push for the export of apricots to national and international markets.

Meanwhile, colourful cultural programmes were presented by artists of Garkone, Darchiks, Sanachay, Bodh Kharboo, Hordas, Yuldar and students of Government High School Garkone that enthralled the audience.

The Apricot Blossom Festival is being held across the Union Territory of Ladakh from April 6 to April 18, during which visitors can witness the mesmerising blossom of apricot trees and displays of its products.
