Executive Councilor Tashi leads conservation dialogue with SLCIT for wildlife preservation in Kargil

Executive Councilor, LAHDC, Kargil, Er. Punchok Tashi chaired a meeting regarding the conservation goals of Snow Leopard Conservancy India Trust (SLCIT) on December 28 and discussed converging and aligning existing government schemes with the SLCIT.

SDM Zanskar, Wildlife Warden Kargil, District Sheep Husbandry Officer, AD Tourism, Live Stock Development Officer, Zanskar, Director SLCIT, Ladakh, Dr Namgyal and other concerned officers attended the meeting.

Dr. Namgyal, Director of SLCIT Ladakh, delivered a comprehensive presentation outlining SLCIT's role in Zanskar and emphasized its overarching mission within the Ladakh region, particularly in promoting nature tourism and wildlife conservation. He highlighted the pressing issue of human-snow leopard conflicts and stressed the importance of raising awareness among the populace about the ecological significance of Ladakh's wildlife.

He further updated EC on SLCIT's active involvement in Zanskar over the past three years, underscoring their achievements and collaborative efforts with local communities.

The director of SLCIT proposed aligning the ongoing projects with various governmental departmental schemes to enhance the effectiveness of their initiatives. Additionally, he advocated for establishing a joint fund in collaboration with the government to further bolster the project's support.

Expressing admiration for SLCIT's exceptional endeavors in wildlife preservation, particularly in safeguarding snow leopards in Zanskar, EC Tashi commended their efforts during the meeting.

Highlighting the crucial role of unified efforts between local government and residents, EC Tashi advised the formulation of a detailed plan outlining activities across various locations in Zanskar. He urged for the submission of this plan to LAHDC Kargil to facilitate collaboration.

Moreover, EC Tashi pledged full support from LAHDC to preserve and protect precious wildlife species within the Kargil district, underscoring the importance of collective efforts in achieving conservation goals.
