Eight traditional Ladakhi products receive GI Tag, boosting cultural heritage and artisan economy
In a significant milestone for the preservation and promotion of Ladakh’s rich cultural and artisanal heritage, eight traditional handicraft products from the Union Territory have been granted the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag. The recognition further strengthens Ladakh’s identity as a repository of indigenous knowledge, craftsmanship, and centuries-old traditions.
The newly registered GI-tagged products include Ladakh Challi Textiles, Ladakh Thigma, Ladakh Painting, Pabu of Ladakh, Ladakh Nambu Textile, Ladakh Pashmina Textile, Ladakh Chilling Metal Work, and Ladakh Likir Pottery.
The GI recognition marks a major achievement in safeguarding Ladakh’s traditional crafts and artistic expressions while enhancing their visibility in national and international markets. A Geographical Indication tag provides legal protection to products associated with a particular region and acknowledges their unique qualities, reputation, and cultural significance linked to their place of origin.
Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta, said the conferment of GI status on these traditional products was a matter of immense pride for the people of Ladakh.
“These recognitions are not merely certifications; they are a tribute to the centuries-old craftsmanship, artistry, and cultural heritage of our people. Each product reflects the creativity of our artisans and the unique identity of Ladakh,” he said.
He added that the GI tag would provide global recognition, authenticity, and protection to artisans while creating economic opportunities and helping safeguard Ladakh’s distinctive traditions.
The newly recognized products represent diverse aspects of Ladakhi culture, lifestyle, and craftsmanship. The Lieutenant Governor lauded the dedication and skills of artisans, cooperatives, and cultural custodians whose efforts contributed to achieving this milestone.
The latest registrations add to Ladakh’s growing portfolio of GI-tagged products. Earlier, Raktsey Karpo Apricot, Ladakh Pashmina, and Shing-Tsak had received GI recognition, highlighting the exceptional quality and uniqueness of Ladakh’s agricultural and artisanal products.
