EC Agriculture flags off first consignment of fresh vegetables for winters in Leh

The first consignment of the fresh supply of vegetables from the cold storage facility was flagged off by Executive Councillor, Agriculture, LAHDC Leh, Stanzin Chosphel on January 25 at Dambuchan, Leh.

The vegetables have been procured by the Department of Cooperative, Ladakh. A total of 8 tonnes of vegetables were received by the Cooperative Department for Leh district. The vegetables were later sent to Cooperative Marketing Society (CMS), Nimoo, and CMS Leh for further distribution in villages such as Basgo, Nimoo, Khaltse, Shey, Thiksey, and Ranbirpur. Fresh vegetables would be provided at a nominal price by the Cooperative Department.

Highlighting the increased amount of the consignment provided to the UT from 4 to 8 tonne this year, EC Chosphel said that the established Cooperative Marketing Society (CMS) and Baami Duniya Cooperative Society (BDCS) objective is to provide each household of every village via the bus consignment with the respective Goba’s cooperation. 

He stated that this practice will continue from January 25 till the road opens and acknowledged the issue of the available expensive, bothersome frozen fruits and vegetables in the market. He assured that all the villages would be covered under this programme starting today till mid-March through a planned distribution system.

He further added that their effort through this will be to provide with the subsidized essentials vegetables and expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the entire concerned department and assured to make it work efficiently. 

Deputy Register Cooperative, Dr. Mohammad Abbas said that the Department of cooperative like every year ensures to provide the people with vegetables in winters due to the harsh weather which has been accomplished with the aid of various cooperative societies.

He said BDCS, store is in Leh which has been providing the subsidized essential commodities to the public and similarly CMS has various blocks around Ladakh like at Nimo, Kharu, Nubra, this is the first time they are playing role in the dissemination of vegetables in winters, priorly done only by BDCS. 

Dr. Abbas informed that this year the consignment has been doubled from 4 ton to 8 ton which will be distributed twice in Leh and twice in Kargil in a week respectively and stated that the first consignment will be sent to Khaltse via Nimoo cooperative society and to Shey, Thiksey, Nang, etc via CMS Leh. He made it clear that the priority is given to the far fledged areas as the city around markets already have the availability and said stringent manners will be practiced for the convenient distribution of the supplies. 

Assistant Register Cooperative of Nubra and Leh, and Baami Duniya Cooperative Society (BDCS) and Cooperative Marketing Society (CMS) members were present at the occasion.
