District task force intensifies crackdown on child, adolescent labour

The District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), Leh, conducted a Pan-India Rescue and Rehabilitation Campaign aimed at eradicating child and adolescent labour through the District Task Force (DTF).

The inspection carried out on February 26 marked the third such drive undertaken during the month.

The joint inspection was conducted by the DTF, comprising officials from the Assistant Labour Commissioner’s office, Chief Medical Officer, Chief Education Officer, Child Development Project Officer, Special Juvenile Police Unit (SJPU), and Child Helpline Unit, Leh.

During the drive, the team inspected shops, restaurants and workshops in Skalzangling, Agling and the industrial area near the airport. The objective was to ensure that no child or adolescent below 18 years of age is engaged in labour.

The inspection was carried out in accordance with the Child and Adolescent Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act and the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act. The team verified the age of workers, assessed working conditions and examined compliance records of establishments.

The District Administration cautioned employers against engaging children or adolescents in labour and warned that strict action would be taken against any violations of the law.

The DCPU, Leh, stated that such inspection drives will continue throughout the year to safeguard the safety, rights and well-being of children in the district.
