Kargil :

Poor enrollments, increasing dropouts from Government School was and is a concern specially for the education department. Various initiatives and programmes are organised to increase enrollment. One such is the Samarga Shiksha, an amalgamation of SSA, RMSA, and Teacher Education, aiming to promote quality education from Pre-Primary to Senior Secondary with community participation.

A mega project was initiated by the Department of Education Kargil to mobilize the community, parents, and teachers who play a vital role to uplift different schools. District Resource Group (DRG) was formed to get the detailed report and submit an action plan to address the main causes and issues.

DRG focuses on infrastructure gaps including IT support, facilities, teacher's training, and Community exchange programme. They visited each and every village/door to door. In the initial days, the responses were not so positive.

After continuous approach and involvement of different stakeholders, Education Department succeeded to support Model school MS Lankore with a great response from the energetic community members of the school. The school was initially functioning with 6 teachers and 3 students. After two years of struggle, the enrollment has increased to 92, and became a model school.

Similarly, DRG succeeded in saving more schools to get shut down such as MS Bathang, MS Hundurman Brok, MS Samar Pashkum, MS Shargole, MS latoo, MS Thangsoo, MS Skigagam,   and many more.

DRG has now extended its mission up-to Zanskar Sub Division and got succeeded to develop a model school in the remote areas like Thangsoo.

In the last three years, DRG has been working in five Educational Zones of District Kargil and around 72 schools were covered under the programme. From single-digit, the enrollment has increased in 24 schools and got them recognized as Model Schools.

The District Unit Samagra has already supported the teaching community to establish the concept of the subject lab in Model Schools like Science lab, Math lab, Language lab, and Social Science lab. The objective of the subject lab is to motivate the students in a subject-specific environment and to develop interest.

The Education Department decided to extend this programme to the rest of the Educational zones of UT Ladakh to get the poor-performing schools on track.  The impact of this community-based model school program has helped the department in improving the dropout rate, and the falling enrollment curve to sit flat with increases of 1-2 percent in enrollment during the last 2 years.
