Deputy Commissioner Nubra, Mukul Beniwal, IAS, chaired a review meeting on the prevention, control and awareness of drug abuse in the district as part of the Union Territory-wide initiative aimed at curbing substance abuse and promoting a drug-free society.

Emphasising that prevention is the first line of defence against drug abuse, the Deputy Commissioner directed all stakeholders to intensify awareness campaigns, particularly among students, through mentorship programmes, counselling sessions and educational outreach activities. He also called for the widespread dissemination of anti-drug awareness messages through posters, public spaces and social media platforms.

Addressing the meeting, Superintendent of Police (SP) Nubra, Stanzin Losal, JKPS, informed that intensive checking and patrolling are being conducted at North Pullu, Agyam, Panamik and other strategic locations to prevent the smuggling of narcotics into the region. He stated that strict action would be taken against individuals involved in drug trafficking and added that efforts are underway to trace and recover narcotic substances already brought into the district.

The Deputy Commissioner stressed that there should be no laxity in regulation and enforcement. He urged government departments, religious leaders, community representatives and Numberdars to work collectively in creating awareness and strengthening community vigilance against drug abuse.
Calling for a united approach, he underscored the importance of active public participation in achieving the objective of a drug-free Nubra.

The meeting concluded with an appeal for collective action and community involvement to ensure the success of the anti-drug campaign across the district.

The meeting was attended by SP Nubra Stanzin Losal, JKPS; SDM Nubra Jigmet Rapten, JKAS; former Deputy Chief Executive Councillor (CEC); Executive Engineer, PWD Nubra; Block Medical Officer (BMO) Nubra; Zonal Education Officer (ZEO) Nubra; Tehsildars; school principals; representatives of religious organisations; Numberdars; and representatives of the Merchant Association, Taxi Union, Adventure Sports Association and Camel Safari Association of Nubra.
