The Deputy Commissioner, Kargil, on July 24 chaired a review meeting with petrol pump owners, officials from SIDCO and the Cooperative Department, representatives of Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), and other concerned officers to assess the status of fuel stations across the district and discuss measures to strengthen fuel accessibility and improve public convenience.

Deputy Commissioner emphasised the need to ensure an uninterrupted fuel supply across the district. He directed that at least one petrol pump in every populated area should remain operational round the clock to cater to residents, tourists and emergency services, particularly during odd hours.

A detailed review of the district's fuel infrastructure was conducted during the meeting. Officials informed that BPCL operates petrol pumps at Taisuru and Ringmospang, while another outlet is under construction at Shargole. HPCL operates fuel stations at Shilikchey and Baroo, while IOCL has outlets at Drass, Kharboo, Shilikchey, Titichumik (Sankoo), Taisuru, Wakha, and two petrol pumps in Zanskar.

The Deputy Commissioner proposed establishing a petrol pump at Humbutingla to improve fuel accessibility in the area. He also highlighted the need for a fuel station along the Khangral–Sanjak route in view of increasing vehicular movement and growing public demand.

During the meeting, SIDCO officials informed that the corporation is in the process of establishing petrol pumps in Drass and Zanskar. It was also noted that the Cooperative Department is currently not operating any petrol pump in the district.

Highlighting the shift towards sustainable transportation, the Deputy Commissioner directed Oil Marketing Companies to install Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations at all fuel outlets wherever feasible. He noted that the Government is providing subsidies for EV infrastructure and instructed the companies to expedite the installation of all pending charging stations.

The Deputy Commissioner also stressed the need to modernise petrol pumps by improving public amenities. He suggested setting up cafés at suitable locations, maintaining clean and tourist-friendly premises, and providing ATM facilities wherever possible. Reviewing the status of washroom facilities, he directed petrol pump operators to ensure hygienic, clean and well-maintained toilets for the convenience of commuters and tourists.

Concluding the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner directed all concerned departments, oil companies and petrol pump operators to submit detailed status and action-taken reports on the issues discussed within two days to facilitate timely follow-up and implementation of the decisions.
