CEC Dr Jaffer inspects temporary school facility for specially abled students at Kurbathang

Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor (CEC), LAHDC Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, on May 4 inspected the temporary school facility for specially abled students at Kurbathang, near Kargil Airport.

Deputy Commissioner Kargil, Rakesh Kumar (IAS); District Social Welfare Officer, Dr. Sarwar Shehzad (JKAS); Chief Education Officer (CEO) Kargil, Sonam Wangchuk; and Executive Engineer, R&B, Mansoor Hussain, accompanied the CEC during the inspection.

The facility, set up on a temporary basis in accordance with student strength, is designed to function as a day-boarding-cum-residential institution to ensure holistic care and education for specially abled children.

During the visit, the CEC inspected all rooms and facilities and directed the concerned officers to ensure that the entire infrastructure is made fully disabled-friendly. He further instructed that the facility be made operational within two weeks. The CEC also assured provision of dedicated transport for students and directed the CEO Kargil to ensure that the vehicle procured for this purpose is accessible and disabled-friendly.

Regarding staffing, the CEC informed that 14 staff members have been assigned to the facility. Interacting with special educators, he emphasized that specially abled students require focused care and attention.

The facility will provide both rehabilitation and educational services, with the rehabilitation component managed by the District Social Welfare Department and the educational component by the Education Department.

Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Kumar also directed officials to compile and maintain an updated list of specially abled students from schools across the district. He assured that there would be no shortage of staff and extended full administrative support for smooth functioning of the facility.

Following the inspection, the CEC, along with the Deputy Commissioner and CEO Kargil, visited hostel accommodations for boys and girls housing Class 10 students appearing in compartment examinations. Interacting with the students, the CEC encouraged them, highlighting the importance of education and assuring continued support from staff.

The CEC also appreciated the efforts of the Deputy Commissioner and CEO Kargil for ensuring a conducive environment for students appearing in compartment examinations.
