Leh :

In a significant accomplishment, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has completed the construction of the Neemo-Padum-Darcha Road, a crucial route linking the remote Zanskar Valley to the mainland. Amidst the nationwide celebration of the festival of colors, Holi, the dedicated personnel of BRO demonstrated resilience in harsh conditions, enduring subzero temperatures and rugged terrain to carve through vertical rock faces. This tireless effort culminated in the connection of the final stretch of the Nyeraks gorge at 23:50 hours on March 25.

This monumental accomplishment is the result of years of relentless effort, dedication, and perseverance exhibited by the BRO personnel amidst some of the most challenging terrains and adverse weather conditions in the region. Stretching across 298 kilometers, the road links Manali to Leh via Darcha (NH-03) and Neemo on the Kargil-Leh Highway.

Beyond mere infrastructure and transportation, the completion of the Neemo-Padum-Darcha Road signifies a commitment to bridging the gap between aspirations and opportunities, empowering local communities, and fostering a better future for the residents of the Zanskar Valley. It is anticipated to catalyze economic development in the region significantly.

By joining the ranks of the third axis, alongside the Manali-Leh and Srinagar-Leh routes, the Neemo-Padum-Darcha Road plays a pivotal role in enhancing connectivity to Ladakh from the mainland. Its strategic importance is further highlighted by its shorter route and the impending construction of the Shinkun La tunnel by BRO, ensuring all-weather connectivity to the strategically significant Ladakh region.

Speaking on this momentous occasion, Lt. Gen. Raghu Srinivasan, VSM, the Director General of Border Roads, said, “In January when the River Zansakar was frozen, we used this to our advantage and moved equipment and personnel along the frozen river to establish additional attack points. This enhanced the progress of work. Today we have established the connectivity on this vital axis. Soon we will start work on black topping the road. With construction of Shinkun La tunnel commencing, the third all weather axis to Ladakh will be established.”

Amidst this historic juncture, it is imperative to recognise the supreme sacrifice made by the BRO personnel who dedicated their lives to the construction of this road. Their indomitable spirit, dedication, and perseverance have been instrumental in making this monumental project a reality, demonstrating BRO's unwavering commitment to enhancing infrastructure along India's borders.
