Boundary rationalization of Karakoram (Nubra) Sanctuary proposed; Changthang next in line

A key proposal aimed at rationalizing the boundaries of the Karakoram Wildlife Sanctuary has been formally submitted to the Union Territory Administration of Ladakh on June 3.

The move comes under the direction of the  Chairman/CEC, LAHDC Leh, Adv. Tashi Gyalson, following a meeting convened to address long-standing concerns related to wildlife areas in the Nubra and Changthang regions, will submit the Rationalisation of Boundary for the Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary soon after the final consultation.

The meeting was held in the presence of the Deputy Chairman, LAHDC Leh, Tsering Angchuk, and attended by the Chief Wildlife Warden, Sajjad Hussain Mufti, the Regional Wildlife Warden, Mandeep Mittal, and LAHDC Councillors Tsering Sandup, Kunzang Lotus, Ishey Spalzang, Karma Namdak, and Thinles Nurboo.

Extensive deliberations focused on the need for early rationalization of sanctuary boundaries to address overlapping land use issues, community concerns, and administrative challenges. The proposal, submitted after thorough discussions with wildlife officials and public representatives, seeks to strike a balance between ecological preservation and the socio-economic rights of local communities.
