Body of Dr. Sonam Dawa cremated in Shey following a huge funeral Rising above political affiliations, leaders across parties in Ladakh expressed their condolences

Thousands of mourners including ministers, leaders, and stakeholders filled the streets of Skara as the body of Dr. Sonam Dawa was driven through the huge crowds. He was cremated with full state honours on 6 February at Shey Kharyok.

Dr. Dawa, who was 70, Chief Executive Councillor, Hill Council, Leh from BJP party was revered by followers. He died on January 29 due to cardiac arrest. On January 30, a candle march was also held in memory of the late leader. 

The funeral procession was started from his residence Skara towards petrol pump. Around 220 monks of Hemis and Chemdey monasteries performed his last rites. 
In the honour of late Dr. Dawa, all commercial setups remained closed for the half day whereas DC also issued an order to observe holiday in all government offices of Leh on the same day.

Paying tribute to the departed soul, Dr. Nirmal Singh, Deputy Chief Minister said, “It’s a great loss for the party as well as for whole Ladakh as he suddenly left us. He was a great leader and a good friend of mine who has dedicated his day and night for the welfare of the people. Being the Chief Medical Officer he has a very strong relationship with the common people.”
 
Terming it as a great loss for the party, Ram Madhav, BJP, State Incharge said, “Dr. Dawa who was the Chief Executive Councillor of Hill Council, Leh was a dedicated leader who worked towards the development of Ladakh’s society. He was a very capable and educated leader and it’s a great loss. Now, it is the responsibility of the Councillors to carry forward his good works and we will try to fulfill all his dreams.”

Paying condolence for the bereaved family members, Chering Dorjai Lakrook, Minister for Cooperatives & Ladakh Affairs and Nawang Rigzin Jora, MLA, Leh said, “The sudden demise of Dr. Dawa is a great loss not only for the BJP but for entire Ladakh.We hope that we can accomplish his dream and vision that he has dreamt for the welfare of the people of Ladakh.”

Others who attended the funeral procession were Naeem Akhtar, Minister for R&B,Chander Prakash Ganga, Minister for Industries and Commerce, Sham Lal Choudhry, Minister for PHE, Thupstan Chhewang, MP, Ladakh,  Satpal Sharma, State Party President, Ashok Kaul, General Secretary, Haji Anayat Ali, Chairman Legislative, Kacho Ahmad Ali Khan, CEC Kargil.

Avny Lavasa, DC, Leh, Sargun Shukla, SSP, Leh, Councillors, relatives, and friends were also present at the funeral ceremony.
