Apricot Blossom Festival 2026 draws tourists to Kargil’s blooming orchards
As part of a series of events held across the Union Territory of Ladakh under the ongoing Apricot Blossom Festival 2026, the Tourism Department Kargil curated a wide range of activities across the picturesque apricot belt of Karkitchoo, Chanigund, Hardass, Handurman, Kharoul, Shilikchey, and adjoining villages on April 12.
The festival, celebrating one of nature’s most enchanting seasons, continues to captivate visitors with a vibrant blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and immersive tourism experiences.
Set against the breathtaking backdrop of blooming apricot orchards in Karkitchoo and nearby villages, tourists were offered guided village walks, heritage trails, and scenic cycling rides, enabling them to engage closely with the region’s pristine environment and living traditions.
The experience was further enriched by stalls showcasing handloom and handicraft products, apricot-based delicacies, and other local food items.
Interactive storytelling sessions by local elders and cultural interpreters provided insights into the region’s history, folklore, and lifestyle.
For adventure enthusiasts, soft adventure activities such as nature hikes, short trekking routes, and riverside leisure experiences were also included, making the programme a comprehensive offering for all categories of tourists.
Visitors were also taken on guided heritage tours to prominent attractions in the area, including the Harka Bahadur War Memorial, petroglyph sites, Sangam, and the orchards of Omachikthang near Kharoul, as well as Handurman Heritage Village and the Border View Point.
Tourists were enthralled by orchard picnics and blossom-viewing spots, where photography enthusiasts and nature lovers captured the fleeting beauty of spring. Hands-on experiences such as traditional cooking demonstrations and tasting sessions of apricot-based dishes added a delightful sensory dimension to the festival.
A significant influx of both domestic and international tourists added to the festive atmosphere, with visitors expressing awe at the surreal beauty of the apricot bloom and the warm hospitality of local communities.
Director Tourism Ladakh, Tsering Paldan, along with Assistant Director Tourism Kargil, Muhammad Ali Tak, and other officials, interacted with tourists, travel trade stakeholders, social media influencers, and vloggers. They encouraged them to promote Ladakh’s apricot blossom season on national and international platforms, highlighting Kargil as a unique springtime destination offering authentic and immersive experiences.
Members of travel trade associations, representatives of travel agencies, and volunteers were felicitated for their valuable contribution to tourism promotion and their efforts in attracting visitors to Kargil and strengthening Ladakh’s tourism profile.
The Apricot Blossom Festival stands as a vibrant testament to Ladakh’s growing prominence on the tourism map, where nature, culture, adventure, and community participation come together to offer an unforgettable springtime experience in the lap of the Himalayas.
