2nd National Lok Adalat disposes of 315 cases across Ladakh; ₹85.58 Lakh settled

During the 2nd National Lok Adalat held on May 31 at the District Court Complex, Leh, a total of 359 cases were taken up across various benches. Of these, 315 cases were successfully disposed of, with a total settlement amount of ₹85,58,020 (Rupees Eighty-Five Lakh Fifty-Eight Thousand and Twenty only).

The cases included bank and recovery matters, matrimonial disputes, criminal compoundable cases, civil cases, and labour disputes, reflecting a wide spectrum of legal issues addressed through this alternative dispute resolution mechanism.

The Lok Adalat was virtually inaugurated by Justice Sindhu Sharma, Judge of the High Court of J&K and Ladakh and Executive Chairman of the Ladakh Legal Services Authority. In her address, she appreciated the peaceful nature of Ladakhi society, noting that the region sees relatively low litigation due to its tradition of amicable dispute resolution. She emphasized the importance of continuing this tradition by utilizing Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms such as Lok Adalats, especially as development brings new legal challenges.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Manoj Parihar, Member Secretary and Principal District & Sessions Judge Leh; Tsewang Phuntsog, Chief Judicial Magistrate Leh; Phuntsog Angmo, Secretary DLSA/Special Mobile Magistrate Leh; senior prosecuting officers; legal aid defense counsels; panel lawyers; PLVs; executive members of the Bar; and several litigants.

A total of six benches were constituted to conduct the Lok Adalat proceedings:
•    Bench No. 1: Manoj Parihar (Principal District & Sessions Judge, Leh) and Advocate Namgail Wangchuk
•    Bench No. 2: Tsewang Phuntsog (Chief Judicial Magistrate, Leh) and Advocate Mohd Ramzan
•    Bench No. 3: Phuntsog Angmo (Special Mobile Magistrate, Leh) and Advocate Touseef Ahmad
•    Bench No. 4: Assistant Commissioner Revenue, Leh and Tehsildar Leh
•    Bench No. 5 (Khaltse): Sayed Tayoub Bukhari (Munsiff, Khaltse)
•    Bench No. 6 (Nubra): Lakshay Badyal (Munsiff, Nubra) and Advocate Zulikha Bano

The event marked a significant step in promoting speedy and amicable dispute resolution in Ladakh, aligned with the values and legal culture of the region.
