Leh :

Nawang Tsering Shakspo, Director, Centre for Research in Ladakh to attend the National Conference marking the 150th birth anniversary of Sri Aurobindo organised by the Government of Puducherry, Department of Art and Culture on December 20.

The conference will be inaugurated by Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan, Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry.

Bengal, all the way from ancient times, has produced many luminary Buddhists, who tirelessly worked to lay a firm Buddhist foundation and civilization in the Himalayas. One such was Atisha Dipankara from Vikramashila University in the 10th century, who, after the ruthless suppression of Buddhism by King Langdarma of Tibet, tirelessly worked to reinstate Buddhism in Tibet. Sri Aurobindo's view on Buddhism is becoming more relevant in the present turmoil world. He sensed the life and culture of the Himalayas by staying and studying with the Darjeeling people and went to England for higher education and returned and served the country by starting the newspaper, ‘Bande Mataram’.

In the seminar, historian Nawang Shakspo will present a paper on Ladakhi history and civilization in the context of Sri Aurobindo, which will pave a way for students of the history of Ladakh and the Himalayas to peep through Aurobindo’s ideals.
