Community-based disaster preparedness programme held in Kargil

A day-long awareness program and mock drill on disaster preparedness for concerned agencies, volunteers and students was organised by District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Kargil in collaboration with National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) on June 11 at auditorium hall.
 
The awareness program was a part of the 15-day visit of the NDRF team to the district for the conduct of Area Familiarization Exercise (FAMEX) to assess the area in terms of different disasters.

Volunteers from SDRF, Baseej-e-Imam Imam Khomeini Memorial Trust (IKMT), Bharat Scouts and Guides, Red Cross, NCC besides police personnel and students participated in the program. 

Experts from NDRF delivered lectures and demonstrated drills on first aid, rope cord, water rescue, lifting of injured personnel, post-disaster management like firefighting and rescue operations to enhance capacity building of the volunteers and community awareness for minimizing risks in the event of untoward happenings.

Do’s and don’ts to be followed during various natural and man-made disaster situations like floods, earthquakes, fires etc were also informed. Also, they highlighted the importance of small precautions to be taken which have the potential to save human lives in times of sudden disasters.

The experts said that planning, coordination and high state of preparedness are the key steps to deal with crisis situations effectively.
