Zanskar :

KVK Kargil–II facilitated farmers and rural youth of Zangla village in Zanskar to listen to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address during the release of the 21st instalment of the PM-KISAN scheme.

The programme was organised in coordination with events held across all ICAR institutes, KVKs, and SAUs nationwide, despite the harsh winter conditions of the region. Officers from the Agriculture Department also participated in the event.

The programme opened with a detailed discussion between scientists and line department officials on agro-climatic technologies developed and standardised for Zanskar farmers over the past eight years.

Dr Mohd Mehdi, Chief Scientist and Head of KVK Kargil–II, highlighted successful demonstrations of non-traditional vegetables—such as onion, French bean, cabbage, cauliflower, and root crops—which he said hold strong potential for the socio-economic upliftment of tribal farmers. He underscored the importance of skill and scientific knowledge, emphasising that these are as crucial as hard work. He urged farmers to maintain regular contact with KVK through in-person visits, social media, and mobile communication.

Dr Shabeer Hussain, Scientist, KVK, stressed the need for soil health management through optimal use of local resources, natural farming practices, crop rotation, and surface mulching. He pointed out that organic farming in Ladakh is feasible only when these practices are followed consistently. Otherwise, dependence on externally procured organic compost—often of substandard quality—will continue, as observed in several villages this year.

Sub-Divisional Agriculture Officer Mohd Ali briefed participants on various government schemes aimed at farmer welfare and encouraged them to approach departmental offices and field staff for assistance. He noted that both types of Ladakh greenhouses are well-suited to improve livelihood opportunities and enhance nutritional security in the region.

An interactive session among scientists, extension personnel, and farmers was also held.

Namberdar of Zangla, Lobzang Tundup, expressed gratitude to KVK Kargil–II for selecting their village for the programme. He said the event provided villagers with vital exposure to new agricultural technologies, especially important given the limited transportation and remoteness that make travel to Padum difficult. He encouraged farmers to stay closely connected with scientists and extension workers from both departments.

Participants concluded the programme by viewing the live telecast from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, marking the release of the 21st installment of PM-KISAN.
