Police Commemoration day observed with tributes to martyrs in Leh
Ladakh Police observed Police Commemoration Day at the District Police Lines, Leh, on October 21, paying tribute to police personnel who laid down their lives in the line of duty while safeguarding the nation.
Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena led the commemoration, while Chief Secretary Ashish Kundra, Director General of Police Anand Jain and senior police officers laid wreaths at the Martyrs’ Memorial and paid homage to the fallen personnel. A ceremonial salute was also presented during the observance.
Addressing the gathering, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena said October 21 was not merely a date on the calendar but an occasion to remember the unwavering courage, dedication and supreme sacrifice of police personnel who laid down their lives to protect the nation's security and prosperity.
A police official highlighted the historical significance of the day, recalling the sacrifice of police personnel at Hot Springs in Ladakh. He said it was a matter of honour for the region to commemorate a day associated with this historic sacrifice.
The official also emphasised that the families of martyrs remain an integral part of the police family. He said the department maintains regular contact with them, enquires about their well-being and ensures that they receive the benefits and assistance available under various welfare schemes.
The observance reaffirmed the department's commitment to honouring the courage and dedication of police personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of the nation and supporting their families.
On October 21, 1959, a group of Indian police personnel was attacked by heavily armed Chinese troops at Hot Springs in Ladakh. Ten policemen were martyred in the unequal confrontation, while seven were taken prisoner.
On November 28, 1959, Chinese troops handed over the bodies of the martyred personnel, which were cremated with full honours at Hot Springs.
Subsequently, the Annual Conference of Inspectors General of Police of States and Union Territories, held in January 1960, decided that October 21 would henceforth be observed as Police Commemoration Day, also known as Martyrs' Day.
