The three-day Great Summer Buddhist Council of Ladakh 2026 (Ladakh Mangtro Yarchos Chenmo 2026) commenced at Ngonpar Gaway Phodang, Matho, on August 21, with Chief Secretary, UT Ladakh, Ashish Kundra, attending the evening session as Chief Guest. The session focused on the theme “Youth and Social Well-being: Protecting Ladakh from the Menace of Drugs.”

The session brought together school students, Buddhist monks, representatives of sacred places, doctors, experts, police personnel, Nambardars and members of the public to deliberate on the growing challenge of substance abuse and the need for collective efforts to safeguard Ladakh’s youth.

The participation of the Chief Secretary underscored the Administration’s emphasis on strengthening coordination among religious and educational institutions, healthcare professionals, law-enforcement agencies, community leaders and civil society to address social concerns and promote youth well-being.

Jamyang Namgyal, In-charge, Ladakh Narcotics Task Force, highlighted legal and regulatory provisions concerning narcotic substances and stressed the need to protect young people from the drug menace. He spoke about the serious consequences of drug abuse and expressed concern over the increasing number of drug-related cases being reported in Ladakh, calling for greater awareness and preventive measures.

Dr Nordan Odzer, Specialist, subsequently addressed the gathering on the importance of guiding youth towards constructive and positive pursuits. Drawing from his professional experience and recent cases involving crime and social issues, he highlighted how harmful habits, particularly drug abuse, can contribute to destructive behaviour and criminal activities. He stressed the importance of timely intervention, awareness and positive guidance to prevent young people from falling into such harmful habits.

The programme also featured vibrant traditional folk dance performances, adding a cultural dimension to the gathering and showcasing Ladakh’s rich heritage.

The Great Summer Buddhist Council of Ladakh 2026, being held over three days, provides a platform for spiritual, cultural and social dialogue, bringing together diverse sections of society to deliberate on issues affecting the well-being of the people and the future of Ladakh.
The council will continue with discussions and programmes focusing on community values, social harmony, cultural heritage and the overall well-being of Ladakh.
