19 BMW Motorrad riders embark on high-altitude Changthang expedition
The Changthang Expedition, featuring BMW Motorrad riders, was officially flagged off from Shanti Stupa, Leh on June 8, by Sanjit Rodrigues, Administrative Secretary, Tourism, UT Ladakh.
The expedition comprises 19 accomplished riders from Maharashtra, known for their expertise in long-distance and high-altitude motorcycling, who have embarked on an extraordinary journey through the remote and pristine landscapes of Ladakh’s Changthang region.
The expedition offers participants a unique opportunity to explore one of Ladakh’s most breathtaking high-altitude terrains. Stretching across the vast plateau of eastern Ladakh, Changthang is renowned for its dramatic landscapes, sweeping horizons, and iconic destinations such as the crystal-clear Pangong Tso and the serene Tso Moriri lakes.
The route also includes traversing Umling La, one of the highest motorable roads in the world, and visiting Hanle, home to India’s first Dark Sky Reserve and a world-class astronomical observatory known for its exceptional stargazing conditions.
During the flag-off ceremony, Sanjit Rodrigues interacted with the riders and appreciated initiatives that showcase Ladakh as a premier global destination for adventure tourism.
Emphasizing the importance of safe, responsible, and sustainable riding practices, particularly in ecologically sensitive and high-altitude areas, he urged participants to view the expedition not merely as an adventure but also as a responsibility.
He encouraged the riders to respect local traditions, protect fragile ecosystems, and remain mindful of wildlife while travelling through the region. He also called upon them to serve as ambassadors of Ladakh by sharing their experiences responsibly and contributing to the promotion of sustainable tourism.
Designed as a premium high-altitude riding experience, the Changthang Expedition combines adventure with responsible tourism. The initiative is supported by the Department of Tourism, UT Ladakh, along with experienced on-ground teams responsible for ensuring safety, logistics, and regulatory compliance throughout the journey.
Participants have also been encouraged to document and share their experiences through social media platforms in collaboration with Ladakh Tourism, helping showcase the region’s unique natural beauty and tourism potential to a wider audience.
