13th Scientific Advisory Committee meeting of KVK Nyoma held in Changthang

The 13th Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) meeting of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Nyoma, University of Ladakh, was held at KVK Nyoma on October 8 under the chairmanship of Prof. (Dr.) Saket Kushwaha, Vice Chancellor, University of Ladakh. Prof. (Dr.) Mohd Mehdi, Coordinator and Controlling Authority of KVKs, University of Ladakh, attended the meeting as the Guest of Honour.

The meeting was attended by senior officers and representatives from the Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Sheep Husbandry, Forest and ICDS departments, along with scientists, SAC members, Nambardars and progressive farmers. Prof. Maheshwar Singh, Associate Director and Dean, School of Agricultural Science and Technology, Leh, and Dr. Nasreen Fatima, Programme Coordinator, KVK Kargil, participated in the deliberations online.

Dr. Phuntsog Tundup, Head of KVK Nyoma, presented the Action Taken Report, Annual Progress Report for 2025–26 and proposed Action Plan for 2027–28. He highlighted the Kendra’s major achievements and ongoing initiatives aimed at supporting farming and pastoral communities in Changthang.

Addressing the meeting, the Vice Chancellor emphasised the need to improve farmers’ livelihoods, promote community-based and farmer-to-farmer learning, and strengthen the manpower of KVK Nyoma to enhance its outreach and effectiveness.

The meeting deliberated on several priority areas, including protected and net-house cultivation, pest and disease diagnostics, low-cost livestock feed, fodder development, pashmina goat health, management of contagious caprine pleuropneumonia (CCPP), seabuckthorn propagation, salt-tolerant tree species, local vegetable production, nutrition programmes, barley seed exchange and exposure visits for farmers.

Representatives of the line departments assured greater inter-departmental coordination and collaboration with KVK Nyoma to strengthen agriculture and allied activities in Changthang.

Progressive farmers and Nambardars appreciated the efforts of KVK Nyoma in promoting scientific agricultural practices and improving the livelihoods of farming communities in the region.

Dr. Tashi Dolker expressed gratitude to the Vice Chancellor, participating officers, scientists, farmers and other stakeholders for their valuable guidance and suggestions.
