One-day kisan mela-cum-vegetable and flower exhibition held at Khaltse

A one-day Kisan Mela-cum-Vegetable and Flower Exhibition was successfully organized at Khaltse on August 20 by the Department of Agriculture, Leh, drawing enthusiastic participation from farmers, students, and local residents.
The event aimed to promote sustainable agricultural practices, showcase local produce, and encourage floriculture and vegetable cultivation in the region.
The programme was graced by Executive Councillor for Agriculture, Stanzin Chosphel, as the Chief Guest. Other notable attendees included Jigmet Stanzin (CAZRI), Deskyong Namgail (DIHAR), Dr. Sonam Spaldon (Scientist, School of Agriculture, University of Ladakh), all Heads of Department (HODs) from the Khaltse sub-division, along with participants and villagers of the region.
The mela was inaugurated by Chief Guest Stanzin Chosphel, who commended the efforts of local farmers and the agriculture department for creating a platform to showcase the achievements of progressive cultivators.
In his address, Councillor Chosphel stressed the importance of adopting modern farming techniques while preserving traditional practices suited to Ladakh’s unique climatic conditions. He also encouraged farmers to focus on seed sustainability and local seed cultivation.
Farmers from across Khaltse sub-division displayed a diverse range of vegetables, flowers, and innovative farming practices. Stalls featuring organic produce and indigenous seeds drew significant interest from visitors.
Prizes were distributed among the best-performing farmers in recognition of their contributions to vegetable and flower cultivation.
Officials from the agriculture department also provided awareness on government schemes, subsidies, and technical support available to farmers.
Adding colour to the event, students from Govt. Middle School Skurbuchan and Govt. High School Wanla presented a cultural programme.
