Kargil :

Government Degree College (GDC) Kargil organised an awareness rally to highlight the importance of protecting and preserving the Indus River and its vital tributaries for sustainable life. The Suru chapter of the rally marked the concluding day of the programme on August 9, focusing on the Suru River—Kargil’s lifeline and one of the most significant tributaries of the mighty Indus.

Around 200 students and faculty members participated, marching from the college through Bagh-e-Khomeini to the Megawatt area. Chanting slogans such as “Save Suru, Save Kargil”, “Ghar ki tarah gali mohalley saf rakho” and “Suru i rgyamtso lhyakhmo joq” in English, Urdu, and Purgi, participants carried placards and posters with impactful messages. Pamphlets on the protection of water bodies were also distributed to the public along the route.

The rally concluded near Satellite Colony Chowk, where a cleanliness drive was held. Students actively collected large amounts of garbage, which was disposed of properly through Municipal Committee dustbins.

Addressing the gathering, Mustafa Ali, Physical Education Director and organising committee member, stressed the importance of such initiatives for a sustainable future. The programme was supervised by Dr. Abdul Hamid, Head, Department of Environmental Science.

Refreshments were served to participants by the College Protocol Committee. The organising team extended gratitude to the District Administration, Municipal Committee Kargil, and the College Principal for their support in making the event a success.
