Leh marks World Blood Donor Day with launch of Advanced Blood Component Facility

In observance of World Blood Donor Day, the Health Department, Leh, in collaboration with the Khamsde Jabstok Welfare Society, organized a large-scale blood donation camp at SNM Hospital, Leh on June 14 under the global theme, “Give Blood, Give Hope: Together We Save Lives.”
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from volunteers, healthcare professionals, students, and civil society members, reflecting the community’s strong commitment to saving lives through voluntary blood donation.
Dr. Yangchen Dolma, State Nodal Officer for the Blood Centre and Pathologist at SNM Hospital, delivered the welcome address. She emphasized the importance of regular blood donation and explained the significance of component separation—including red blood cells, platelets, and plasma. She noted that Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP) can be stored for up to two years at –80°C, enabling critical support during emergencies such as COVID-19, dengue, and surgical interventions.
A key highlight of the event was the inauguration of the Component Separation Facility at the Blood Centre by Chief Executive Councillor, LAHDC Leh, Advocate Tashi Gyalson. This advanced facility marks a major milestone in Ladakh’s healthcare infrastructure, enhancing the region’s capacity to provide effective and timely blood transfusion services.
The CEC commended the exceptional efforts of Manoj Kumar, Drug Inspector (Central Government) and Nasreen Bano, Assistant Drug Controller, UT Ladakh, for their pivotal roles in establishing the facility in a short span of time.
In his keynote address, CEC Gyalson applauded the donors' spirit of altruism and the dedication of medical professionals. “There is no artificial substitute for blood. By donating, you're not just helping patients—you’re saving lives,” he said, also acknowledging the collaborative efforts of the Health Department and partner organizations.
Dr. Rinchen Chosdol, Medical Superintendent, SNM Hospital, extended heartfelt thanks to the CEC for his continued support and visionary leadership. She lauded the efforts of all healthcare workers, volunteers, and donors, adding that the inauguration of the component separation facility represents a significant leap forward in patient care and blood safety across the region.
A representative from Khamsde Jabstok Welfare Society addressed the gathering, dispelling common myths about blood donation and urging youth to participate actively in such life-saving initiatives. Certificates of appreciation were presented to all blood donors in recognition of their valuable contribution.
