Ladakh gears up for 79th Independence Day: Dr. Pawan Kotwal chairs review meeting

Chief Secretary of the Union Territory of Ladakh, Dr. Pawan Kotwal, chaired a high-level review meeting on July 28 to assess and oversee preparations for the upcoming 79th Independence Day celebrations across Leh and Kargil districts.
The meeting focused on ensuring the smooth, dignified, and well-coordinated conduct of the celebrations, with a strong emphasis on discipline, cultural representation, and public participation.
Dr. Kotwal highlighted that the opening ceremony must begin with a well-synchronized drill by paramilitary and other uniformed forces, aiming to surpass the standards set in previous years. The celebration venues in both Leh and Kargil will remain unchanged. He also emphasized the importance of correctly observing the ceremonial distinction between hoisting and unfurling of the National Flag, which will be performed by the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh.
He instructed SDMs and Tehsildars to uphold the solemnity of the occasion, ensure timely distribution of invitations, and strictly follow the event schedule. Municipal Committees were directed to maintain cleanliness and implement stray dog control measures to prevent any disruption during the function.
Cultural programs are to be concise, well-disciplined, and carefully curated to reflect the rich heritage of Ladakh. The Chief Engineer, R&B, was tasked with ensuring all necessary infrastructure and venue arrangements are in place. The DGP will oversee security preparations, while the School Education Department and respective Deputy Commissioners will select enthusiastic students for the march past and cultural performances.
Dr. Kotwal also proposed organizing an evening event in local markets to engage tourists and foster a patriotic atmosphere.
Special focus was laid on arranging refreshments for dignitaries, playing patriotic songs before the formal program, and ensuring proper seating arrangements for religious and government dignitaries. He urged that official speeches be updated with recent developments, including achievements such as women’s reservation, employment opportunities for locals in gazetted posts, and other policy milestones from the past year.
Key landmarks such as Polo Ground and Popular Chowk will be decorated to instill pride and reinforce the spirit of hard-won freedom. Medical teams will remain on standby, and drinking water facilities will be arranged at all venues.
The Independence Day program will also feature stories of Ladakhi heroes and brave soldiers, aimed at inspiring youth and deepening public appreciation for the occasion.
The meeting was attended by Principal Secretary, Director General of Police, Administrative Secretaries, Divisional Heads, Defence and Police Officers, Chief Engineers, and representatives from the Cultural Academy, Information Department, NIC, and municipal bodies of Leh and Kargil.
