High-level meeting charts roadmap for strengthening Kargil’s education sector

Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor, LAHDC Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, on August 13 chaired a high-level meeting with Bhanu Prabha, Administrative Secretary for Higher Education, School Education, Technical Education & Skill Development, UT Ladakh, to review ongoing and newly launched schemes of the School Education Department and to discuss measures to improve education standards in the district.

Held at the Conference Hall, Baroo, the meeting brought together key officials and stakeholders to address pressing challenges in the education sector.

Attendees included Member of Parliament (Ex-Officio Member, LAHDC Kargil) Haji Hanifa Jan, Executive Councillors, Councillors of LAHDC Kargil, Deputy Commissioner/CEO LAHDC Kargil Rakesh Kumar, Director School Education UT Ladakh, Chief Education Officer Kargil, Principal DIET Kargil, Deputy Chief Education Officer Sankoo, Principals of Government Higher Secondary Schools, Zonal Education Officers, and Headmasters of Government High Schools.

Discussions covered progress and expenditure under Samagra Shiksha, status of works under the Special Development Package, implementation of PM SHRI Schools, rationalisation of teaching staff, and the Winter Residential Coaching Programme.

Director School Education, Tsering Paldan, presented an overview of CBSE results for Classes 10 and 12, noting concerns over average scores in several subjects. He emphasised the need for pre-board examinations, stronger parent-teacher engagement, and targeted academic support. Data and figures were shared with stakeholders, and suggestions were sought to improve student performance.

Reviewing the data, Dr. Akhoon stressed the urgency of identifying root causes for poor results and encouraged councillors and principals to suggest practical, actionable solutions. He introduced a draft transfer policy—currently under stakeholder consultation—promising it would be implemented with complete transparency and accountability. He also highlighted the need for both short-term and long-term measures, including remedial and residential classes, and emphasised strengthening elementary education as the foundation for future academic success.

Dr. Akhoon thanked Bhanu Prabha for facilitating the meeting and assured that LAHDC Kargil would fully support all initiatives to uplift the education sector. He underscored that collective effort and commitment were essential for meaningful reform.

MP Haji Hanifa Jan praised the deliberations but stressed that resolutions must lead to visible action on the ground. He called for zero tolerance towards any compromise in quality education and urged stakeholders to treat the matter with utmost seriousness.

Administrative Secretary Bhanu Prabha expressed appreciation for the active participation and valuable inputs. She stressed cooperation, innovative teaching methodologies, and incorporating stakeholder recommendations to achieve sustainable improvements in school education.

The meeting concluded with a joint commitment to work together for tangible improvements in the educational standards of Kargil district, ensuring lasting benefits for the region’s students.
