Maan Merak :

Heavy flash floods struck the villages of Maan and Merak on August 12, causing extensive destruction. On August 13, Councillor Konchok Stanzin visited the affected areas to assess the damage.

He was accompanied by SDM Durbuk  Mohd Ismail (JKAS), SHO Tangtse, officials from the Revenue Department, Irrigation & Flood Control (JE), Rural Development Department (Panchayat Secretary), PWD, village Gobba, and members of the Maan Pangong.

The team carried out a detailed survey of the damage and will submit a comprehensive report to higher authorities in the coming days.

The flash floods resulted in widespread losses, including the washing away of irrigated crops belonging to several families, debris-filled homes rendering stored food inedible and houses unsafe, and damage to cattle sheds, yak shelters, greenhouses, and toilets. Several commercial camps in Maan and Merak were destroyed. Debris blockages along the PMGSY road from Maan to Merak disrupted connectivity, while major irrigation khuls and headworks suffered severe damage. Other losses included damage to Primary School Maan, JJM water supply infrastructure, and power supply DG sets.

Councillor Stanzin directed the Superintending Engineer to deploy excavators immediately to clear debris from the PMGSY road. The Irrigation Department is already working on restoring the khuls and headworks, while the PWD will undertake repairs to the damaged link road. The FCAPD will provide dry rations to families whose homes are filled with debris. Revenue and Rural Development Departments will prepare a full damage report to facilitate compensation from the Disaster Management Department.

The Councillor expressed deep gratitude to the Indian Army stationed at Thakung for promptly providing manpower to clear debris from homes and community spaces, deploying JCBs to reopen roads, rescuing stranded vehicles, and distributing dry rations to affected families and labourers.

He also commended the quick response and coordination of all officers and officials, led by SDM Durbuk, during the visit.

Appealing for urgent relief, Councillor Stanzin urged the UT Administration, LAHDC, and District Administration to sanction substantial compensation at the earliest, stating, “The losses are enormous, affecting every family in the area. Early relief and restoration are essential to help our people recover from this tragedy.
