CEC reviews progress of new terminal at KBR Airport, applauds sustainable infrastructure efforts

Chairman/Chief Executive Councillor (CEC), LAHDC Leh, Adv. Tashi Gyalson conducted a comprehensive review of the ongoing construction of the new Domestic Terminal Building at Kushok Bakula Rinpoche (KBR) Airport, Leh, on May 1.
The visit focused on evaluating the progress of the terminal's construction and the advanced sustainability features being incorporated into the project, which is poised to become a model for modern, eco-friendly airport infrastructure in India.
Spanning 23,810 square meters, the terminal is designed to accommodate up to 3.2 million passengers annually. It will feature state-of-the-art passenger amenities and integrate India’s largest geothermal system, along with solar energy technology, to maximize energy efficiency. The terminal aligns with Ladakh’s goal of becoming a carbon-neutral region and is being developed as a 4-star GRIHA-rated energy-efficient facility. It will also showcase Ladakhi cultural aesthetics, blending traditional architectural elements with contemporary design.
Umasankar, Airport Director and General Manager of the Airports Authority of India (AAI), briefed the CEC on the current status of construction and confirmed that the terminal is on track for completion by October 2025. He assured that the remaining work is progressing swiftly to meet the projected timeline.
CEC Gyalson commended the efforts of all implementing agencies and the construction team for their dedication to quality, innovation, and sustainability. He highlighted that this landmark infrastructure project reflects the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to transform Ladakh and promote sustainable development in the region.
The CEC was accompanied by senior officials from the Airports Authority of India, including the Joint General Manager, Assistant General Manager, Senior Manager, and Resident Construction Manager; representatives from Engineers India Limited (EIL); and the project team from Shapoorji Pallonji Construction Pvt. Ltd. (SPCPL).
Also present were key officials from the UT Administration and allied departments, including the Superintending Engineer (PWD Leh), Deputy Secretary (Ladakh Academy of Art, Culture & Languages), President (LGA), Vice President (LBA), Executive Engineers from R&B Division, PHE, PDD, LDA, and the Executive Officer of the Municipal Committee Leh, among others.
